Rhinoplasty is performed using a closed technique, an open technique or a closed-open technique. A closed rhinoplasty is performed only utilizing incisions inside the nose. It is generally utilized if a patient does not require any refinements to the tip of the nose. An open rhinoplasty utilizes incisions inside the nose as well as a small, inconspicuous, stair-step incision on the underside of the nose (columella). It is often used when the tip of the nose requires refinements. It allows for more accurate assessment and shaping of the underlying tip cartilages and potential placement of cartilage grafts. A closed-open technique utilizes the closed approach to set the height of the bridge followed by the open technique to refine and reshape the cartilages of the tip.

Dissolving stitches are used internally, and dissolving or tiny removable stitches are used to close any external incisions. A splint is placed on the nose at the end of the rhinoplasty procedure and is kept in place for five to seven days post operatively. It is removed in the office. Dr. Grover usually does not use any packing in the nose following the rhinoplasty procedure unless the turbinates are reduced. You will have a "drip pad" under your nose to collect any drainage that may occur. You will change the drip pad multiple times during the first 48 hours following your surgery. You will develop some swelling and usually only minimal bruising. Frequent icing is recommended during the first 48 to 72 hours. You should keep your head elevated while you sleep for the first one to two weeks.

Most swelling will resolve within the first 6 weeks following surgery. However, final results will not be revealed for about one year.
